HomeSoftware ReviewsOpera GX, the new desktop browser for gamers
Opera’s line of products keeps growing and evolving. The recently launched Opera Touch focused on being a bridge between the desktop and mobile apps. On the other hand, Opera GX focuses its efforts on those who play PC videogames. This new browser is based on version 60 of the browser but adds features that are focused on using and distributing streaming videos, among other common practices within the gaming universe.
The announcement was made during the last E3 when the browser was introduced as a product developed specifically for the gamer community. Although it’s still in its early-access phase, anyone can download the app and use it without any type of restriction. The official launch is set to be this year but no specific dates have been announced.
Opera Gx is designed for gamer like me. You don’t have to be a gamer to use this. You might want to use original one instead. In the future, other competitors like Google, Mozilla and Microsoft would make a gaming browser. GX Corner: a gateway to free games, deals, gaming news and new releases. Opera GX includes the GX Corner, a portal within the browser which is a one-stop source for gaming news. The GX Corner includes a game-release calendar as well as a deals and free gamers aggregator which lets GX users know first about GTA V being offered for free and other.
Opera GX is a modified version of Opera with a RAM and CPU limiter, Twitch integration, and a selection of customization options catered towards gamers. While I applaud Opera for trying something new, I'm not sold on the idea that the browser will offer better performance than, say, the desktop Opera browser.
- The Opera GX web browser is a new alternative to the famous Opera browser, focusing on offering gamers’ services and features.Although this version of Opera shares the same core as the standard web browser, it does feature some innovative features that are meant to appeal to the gaming community.

Far beyond neon aesthetics and the contrasts that are perfectly adapted to the field that it’s trying to enter, the most eye-catching features are certain modules that can be used to monitor and limit the consumption of the RAM memory and the CPU processing. Such panels can be accessed through the dropdown menu located to the left side of the interface. They’re the ideal accessory when it comes to broadcasting your own gameplays using external tools because you can make sure that the browser doesn’t eat up part of the resources that the system needs to work properly.
The fact that Opera GX focuses its attention on content streaming is striking, not just because of the previously-mentioned panels, but also because of its collaboration with Twitch through an exclusive tab. It also includes a feature that allows you to watch superimposed pop-up tabs, even if you’re not actually in the site that’s playing the video (either Twitch, YouTube, or any other similar service).
In addition, some of the key features from the standard Opera client are also included. We’re talking about an integrated ad blocker, a VPN service, pop-up tabs using the WhatsApp and Facebook Messanger web clients, its very own cryptocurrency trading app and a super complete customizable interface. As a matter of fact, you can change the menu’s colors and add all kinds of transition effects. The tuning elements of the gamer ecosystem have reached the browsers, whether we like it or not.
But there’s a cherry on top of this striking cake. Opera even included a themed news service that updates you on the upcoming releases through IGDB as well as the most relevant information by linking you to important media sites in several languages. Nevertheless, this HUB is not quite ripe yet in certain languages, which is understandable given that we’re talking about a preliminary version of the final product that won’t be available until the end of the year. We’ll keep an eye out.

Web browser maker Opera has acquired YoYo Games, the maker of the GameMaker Studio 2 game engine, for $10 million, and it has also launched its Opera Gaming division.
The deal underscores Opera‘s efforts to differentiate its web browser, Opera GX, through a gaming community. Opera itself has more than 380 million people using its web browsers worldwide. Its new Opera GX gaming browser has seven million monthly active users as of December, up 350% from a year earlier.
Opera Gaming will focus on expanding Opera’s capabilities and monetization opportunities in the gaming, said Krystian Kolondra in an interview with GamesBeat. Publicly traded Opera is based in Oslo, Norway, while YoYo Games is based in Dundee, Scotland.
“A couple years ago, we made the decision to produce innovation and not have to compete with mass market in browsers,” Kolondra said. She is Opera’s executive vice president of browsers. “We focus on some segments that actually grow and are meaningful. So we decided to go after gaming.”
GameMaker Studio 2 found its niche as a tool for making 2D games, and it’s being used by people who have very little training in skills such as programming. Kolondra said the tech has hit a point where people are becoming just as interested in making their own games as playing them. Opera also has a built-in cryptocurrency wallet.
YoYo Games had more than 400,000 new registered users in 2020.

“It lowers the barrier to entry for anyone to start making their games,” Kolondra said.
The games can run across a wide range of web-supported platforms including PCs, mobile iOS/Android devices, and consoles.
YoYo Games general manager Stuart Poole will remain with the business alongside technical lead Russell Kay. YoYo Games has worked on the GameMaker engine for years, and it has been downloaded more than 10 million times since 2012.
Opera launched the Opera GX gaming browser in 2019. It features customization options, sound effects, background music, a gaming-inspired design, as well as CPU, memory, and network bandwidth limiters that make the browser less resource-hungry .
Some of the big hits made with GameMaker include Risk of Rain, Undertale, and Hyper Light Drifter. Those games have sold millions of copies. Kolondra said the company does not plan to make exclusive games that run only with the Opera GX browser, as the goal is to create a community around Opera GX users but also make GameMaker Pro 2 available to those who want to make cross-platform games.
Kolondra said that good browser performance is essential to even 2D gaming, and sustaining that performance across mobile devices and laptops as well as variable bandwidth and connectivity requires thinking outside of traditional application silos. The line between building good games and good browsers has been eroding for years — with gaming interactivity across internet connections ramping up and browsers growing more multi-function and sophisticated, he said.
Opera GX has been getting good reviews from players who don’t want to sacrifice performance just by having a web browser running, Kolondra said. It has more than a million ratings to date. Free download ms office for mac os x.
“For us, gaming is more like a community now,” Kolondra said. “This is going to accelerate our growth as it will be a very unique value proposition. GameMaker Studio makes it easy for people to create games.”
